Important News

The following is an email received from Rick Hayden regarding the need to relocate Camp Christian’s vesper area.

Subject: Calling all congregations who love Camp Christian

For a number of years, the lower campus Vesper area has experienced flooding, causing a number of camps to have to use alternate plans for evening vespers.

A study was undertaken in 2007 to evaluate options.  Since the lower campus Vesper area is located in a state defined flood plain, no improvements are legally allowed in that area.

The study defined an alternate area on the upper campus, between the Girls cabins and the cookout area. This alternate area addresses both the flood plain issue and the safety concern of crossing Maple Dell Road, especially after dark.

In preparation for development of this area, in 2010, a group from Newark Central, at the direction of Al Channell, Camp Superintendent, removed trees to clear a suitable area for the new Vesper spot.

Due to extreme flooding this past December, a movement has begun to accelerate the development of the new Vesper Area, in consultation with both Steve Bentley & Al Channell.

Newark Central would like to spearhead the effort, but welcomes assistance from any and all interested congregations.

A list of labor opportunities, materials needed (and funding) and task sequence is being developed to share the effort among all who wish to participate.

Planned dates to work on the area are March 29, April 12, April 26, and May 17 (Men’s Work Weekend), weather permitting.

  • Site prep – grind tree stumps, remove debris (March 29)
  • Site prep – excavate for concrete pads & gravel base (March 29)
  • Site prep – trench for electric power (March 29)
  • Place underground electric cabling (March 29)
  • Site prep – excavate for asphalt path (March 29)
  • Place fill and grade site (March 29)

Please contact me at 740-973-0322 if you plan to attend any of these work days, and pass this on to anyone I might have missed.

Please prayerfully consider how your congregation is called to help make this a reality.
